1 January 2023 — Border Controls Are Lifted
On Thursday 8 December 2022, the interior ministers of the EU member states unanimously adopted a decision confirming Croatia's readiness to join the zone.
The timetable for introducing border-free travel was as follows:
- 1 January 2023 — border controls were lifted at the land crossings with Slovenia and Hungary, and at sea crossings with member states of the zone
- 26 March 2023 — controls were lifted at border crossings in airports
Despite the absence of border checks, travellers and holidaymakers in Croatia must still carry an identity document — a passport or national ID card, valid for at least 90 days from the date of crossing the Croatian border. This requirement applies to adults and children alike.
At the same time, we remind you that Croatia's neighbours Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Serbia are not members of the Schengen zone, and border traffic with these countries continues under the previous rules, with document checks. This is especially important for anyone who, during their holiday in Croatia, plans excursions beyond its borders (e.g. Mostar, Međugorje) or heads to southern Dalmatia along the old road through Neum (a bridge now leads to Pelješac, so this is no longer necessary).

From the new year, Croatia adopts the EURO as its official currency.
