Croatia is switching to the euro
On 1 January 2023 Croatia is switching to the euro. What does this mean for tourists visiting this beautiful country?
And what should you do with the kuna left over from this year's holidays?
As of 1 January 2023, the official currency of Croatia will be the euro!
This is certainly good news for everyone spending their holidays on the Adriatic. The age-old dilemma of what to exchange your money into and where to do it is now a thing of the past. But what if you still have some kuna left after this year's trip? Don't worry – nobody will lose their money.
How will the currency changeover work?
From the beginning of September until 31 December 2022, Croatia applies dual pricing of goods and services. The amount on the product label and on the receipt is shown in kuna and additionally converted into euros at the rate of 1 EUR = 7.53450 HRK. This is the official conversion rate at which Croatia enters the eurozone.
To ease the transition to the new currency, during the first 14 days – that is, from 1 January (00:00) until 14 January 2023 (24:00) – cash payments will be accepted in both kuna and euros at the same time. Change will be given only in euros, and in a single transaction a seller may accept a maximum of 50 HRK coins or banknotes.
After 14 January it is no longer possible to pay in HRK, but until the end of 2023 the kuna can be exchanged for euros (free of charge) at all banks, FINA offices and post offices throughout Croatia.
From the beginning of 2024, the former Croatian currency will be accepted for exchange only at the branches of the Croatian National Bank (Hrvatska Narodna Banka – HNB) – banknotes indefinitely, and coins only for a further 3 years.
