Plitvice Lakes National Park – a magical place in Croatia
Plitvice Lakes National Park is without a doubt a magical place. Waterfalls, the stunning turquoise-green colour of the water, diverse fauna and flora… No wonder it is a place so eagerly visited by tourists!
The oldest and largest national park in Croatia
The Plitvice Lakes are the oldest and largest National Park in Croatia. It is located in the mountainous region of Croatia, 140 kilometres from the Croatian capital – Zagreb. Since 1979 it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The area of the Park is almost 300 km2, of which 1% of the surface is made up of these beautiful, characteristic clusters of karst lakes, the so-called Upper and Lower Lakes, which are of the greatest interest to visitors due to their rarely seen colour.
Wooden walkways, boat cruise and electric train
The rest of the area consists of forests, gorges and meadows, which you can admire while walking along the wooden walkways. You can also enjoy these beautiful views from the deck of a passenger boat, which allows you to cross to the other shore of one of the largest lakes, as well as during a ride on the electric train, which runs along the eastern wall of the park between its two main entrances. It is worth noting here that both the cruise and the train ride are included in the price of the ticket.
Seven trails open to visitors
There are 7 trails available to visitors. They are divided according to length, with an estimated time given for how long it takes to walk each of them. Information about the time you need to set aside to walk a given trail is very helpful in planning your trip. The shortest of them is the 3.5-kilometre trail, which takes about 2–3 hours to complete, while the longest trail is 18.3 kilometres and takes between 6 and 8 hours to walk.
